Fiberglass Swimming Pool Coatings – Which One?

Now that you have chosen a fiberglass pool for your oasis, which type of coating would work best?  There are several types of coatings and each one has its plus and minuses. 

Traditional Gel Coats – This type is hand applied. It is available in a variety of colors and custom blends.  Look similar to a plaster finish when the pool is full of water. Colored gel coats do not fade like the plaster kind and they stay smooth longer. 

Flekstone – This type is very similar to pebble finishes. It is hand applied, lamination using colored chips over a layer of fiberglass. Looks similar to rock or pebble pool finishes without the rough feeling.  Available in any color and they are colors that last a long time. 

So you see that there are several types of surface materials to choose from for your fiberglass swimming pool, so you should be able to find a material that fits your design scheme.

How to Get Rid of Stains in Your Fiberglass Pool

Swimming pool stains are mainly caused from too much iron and copper in the water. Iron stains will usually be brown and rusty looking. Copper stains are usually bluish to grayish in color. 

When your pool’s pH is too low, the metal in the water stays within the solution.  When the pH is too high, metals in the water cling to the walls of your pool. There are several steps you need to take to rid those metal stains.

  1. Identify the type of stain
  2. Prime the water chemistry for stain removal.
  3. Flush the metal from your system

Stains can come back.  Every time you add water to your swimming pool you are adding more metals. You should use a stain and scale preventative product each time you add water. My husband and I wanted to take a minute to tell you what a great experience we had building our pool with A&S, particularly Ron (our sales person) and Amy (our scheduler). Both of these people made themselves available to us what seemed like 24/7 to answer any question or address any concern we had along the way. They never seemed to be inconvenienced by us in any way. Additionally, as the process moved along, everything they said would happen – did. They kept their word to us and demonstrated integrity which is difficult to find as you contract work to be done. Again, your staff – remarkable!
