Fiberglass pools are one of the most popular choices for homeowners.  Fiberglass pools are faster to install than concrete pools.  They are available in various styles and shapes. They are easier to clean and maintain. 

  1. Clean out debris and leaves regularly.  Debris will upset your chemical balance quickly.
  2. Brush the walls with a soft bristles – hard bristles will scratch your pool’s surface.
  3. Run your pool filter 6-8 hours a day. Run it especially when swimming, that’s when dirt and debris is stirred up and can be filtered.
  4. Keep a proper chemical balance – test water and add chemicals if needed. 

This may sound like a lot to do to enjoy your fiberglass pool but it is much simpler to maintain than a concrete pool.  Keep a regular cleaning schedule and your pool will stay looking its best.

When Searching for a Fiberglass Pool Contractor

1. Make sure all the contractors you are considering have business addresses and telephone numbers. Look for contractors who have been in the pool industry for at least  five years.

2.  Ask for references. Contact them to learn what their experiences were before, during and after work was completed. 

3.  Check for insurance and licensing. Ask to see certificates for liability and worker’s compensation.

4. Inquire about materials used, length of warranty and services included in the price. 

5. Always pay using cashier’s checks or money orders and get a receipt.  Verify what is included in the installation and what is not included. 

6.  Put in writing how long the installation will take from ground breaking to completion.

How long will It Take to Install a Fiberglass Pool?

Be leery of pool companies who say they can install a fiberglass pool in one day.  It’s nearly impossible to do this.   There are different phases that need to be completed before actually putting the pool into the ground. Here are the steps: 

Permit application and approval -1-2 weeks
Excavation and digging – 2-3 days
Setting, Plumbing, water filling and backfilling of pool
Electrical hookup – 2-3 days
Concrete forming and pouring – 2-3 days
Yard grading – 2-3 days
Pool cleaning and water treatment – 2-4 days 

When purchasing your fiberglass pool, consider these factors.  Remember that just setting and filling a pool does not mean that it is “installed”

Many homeowners are purchasing fiberglass pools because it typically requires less maintenance than concrete or vinyl lined pools.  A fiberglass pool ‘s shell is smooth and easy to clean its important to follow proper cleaning procedures to ensure that you do not damage the fiberglass.

Tips in cleaning your pool:

Avoid abrasive cleaners – a fiberglass pool’s gel coat can be easily scratched or nicked. Use a pool tile cleaner and buff marks out with car polish. 

Remove metal deposits with specialized products – Most water contain metals and these metals can build up over time. Use metal removing agents from your local pool store. Many of these removing agents convert the metal into salt that can be easily washed out through the pool’s filter 

Control algae – most algae will be in the water itself and not the walls of your pool.  Increase the chlorine or bromine to treat algae. 

Use a professional when repairing cracks – when not properly done, cracks in a fiberglass gel coat can look even more conspicuous due to uneven texture and poor color matching.

Fiberglass Swimming Pool Coatings – Which One?

Now that you have chosen a fiberglass pool for your oasis, which type of coating would work best?  There are several types of coatings and each one has its plus and minuses. 

Traditional Gel Coats – This type is hand applied. It is available in a variety of colors and custom blends.  Look similar to a plaster finish when the pool is full of water. Colored gel coats do not fade like the plaster kind and they stay smooth longer. 

Flekstone – This type is very similar to pebble finishes. It is hand applied, lamination using colored chips over a layer of fiberglass. Looks similar to rock or pebble pool finishes without the rough feeling.  Available in any color and they are colors that last a long time. 

So you see that there are several types of surface materials to choose from for your fiberglass swimming pool, so you should be able to find a material that fits your design scheme.
